Reiki as complementary therapy for health and wellness

Great list!  Check out #8 REIKI:

8) Reiki

Reiki is a therapy that was developed in 1922 by a Japanese Buddhist. The practitioners of this therapy use the technique of palm healing. Here they place their hand on the affected area of the body and pass the universal energy through it. This is said to enhance the healing of both the physical body and the mind. It reduces stress and tension from the body and helps it function more efficiently.

The term ‘Rei’ means higher power and ‘ki’ means life force energy. This form of therapy promotes relaxation, reduces depression and anxiety. It is also said to help relieve shoulder, wrist or back pains. Studies have also proved that Reiki can help in decreasing the pain, tiredness, and anxiety that are associated with cancer.

Case Report: A Non-Surgical, Non-Pharmacologic, Mind-Body Intervention for Ovarian Tumor

Case Report: A Non-Surgical, Non-Pharmacologic, Mind-Body Intervention for Ovarian Tumor

Abstract
A 60-year old female patient designed an experimental protocol of distant prayer,
Reiki, and guided imagery to successfully treat an ovarian tumor measuring 2.5
centimeters.
Background:
On  October  8,  2008,  multiplanar  imaging  using  T1-T2  weighted
technique/MRI of patient’s lumbar spine reported “a suspected cyst within the
right ovary measuring 2.5 centimeters” [1].
Patient:
The patient is a psychologist who is also a Reiki master. Her decision
to experiment with prayer, Reiki and guided imagery was due to the size of the
tumor which was smaller than the 3 cm. required for surgical intervention.
Setting:
The patient’s home office was the setting for the experiment.
Intervention
: Due to a medical crisis in the patient’s family, she was delayed
in  scheduling  an  office  visit  with  an  obstetrician/gynecologist  to  follow  up  the
findings in the MRI report of 10/8/08. On 10/10/08, she sent an email request
to five Reiki masters to request distant Reiki be transmitted to the “suspected
cyst.” The Reiki masters emailed their students, asking that they transmit Reiki
to the patient’s right ovary.

#5 Reiki and acupuncture: These techniques endeavor to improve the body’s inner energy flow.

Complementary and Integrative Therapies: 5. Reiki and acupuncture: These techniques endeavor to improve the body’s inner energy flow. Integrative therapies can complement the conventional therapies prescribed to patients with various types of cancer, such as chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted or hormonal drugs, radiation, surgery and stem cell transplants. These supportive therapies, Del Rosso says, may help ease the side effects of the conventional treatments, which can include nausea, vomiting, fatigue, pain, neuropathy, anorexia and emotional issues including anxiety, fear, sadness, grief, depression and concern over the loss of physical attractiveness. - See more at: http://nursing.onclive.com/web-exclusives/nurses-discuss-mindfulness-6-complementary-therapies-in-cancer-care#sthash.2yw5QA6i.dpuf

Effects of Reiki With Music Compared to Music Only Among People Living With HIV

Effects of Reiki With Music Compared to Music Only Among People Living With HIV.
Bremner MN, Blake BJ, Wagner VD, Pearcey SM.
*(Abstract)*
Persons living with HIV (PLWH) often seek complementary treatments to improve their overall health and well-being. Reiki, an ancient healing practice, has been found to be effective in reducing symptoms of stress, anxiety, pain, and depression. The purpose of this pilot study was to evaluate the effectiveness of Reiki as a complementary treatment for PLWH. Using a two-group mixed-methods experimental design, 37 participants were randomized to either a 6-week Reiki with Music Group or a Music Only Group. Self-reported and physiologic measures were obtained at baseline, 6 weeks, and 10 weeks. Significant improvements in relief of pain and stress in those receiving RMG were found. At the 6-week assessment, semi-structured interviews were conducted with all participants. Qualitative findings indicated that Reiki and music therapy helped reduce stress, anxiety, and depression. Evidence-based data regarding the effectiveness of Reiki will help nurses help patients better manage HIV-related symptoms.

The healing power of Reiki from NEWSWEEK magazine.

Hands are, deceptively, the most essential weapon at a doctor’s disposal. Whether they’re handling a scalpel, administering a vaccination or setting a broken bone, a doctor’s hands are a vital part of any Western medical practice. But some believe a skilled set of hands are all you need to heal a major malady—no instruments required. Reiki, a Japanese form of spiritual medicine developed by Mikao Usui in the early 20th century, employs the hands to transfer energy with perceived healing qualities into the bodies of the ailing.
For those who willingly receive the energy, results are hard to deny, anecdotal though they may be. The International Center for Reiki Healing website boasts an extensive section of testimonials, with individuals from all across the globe sharing stories of having benefited from Reiki for conditions varying in severity from uncomfortable to seemingly insurmountable. One supporter recounts having an abscessed tooth cured by the method, saving her the pain of a root canal. Others claim to have had cancer cured by distant Reiki, a form where non-present practitioners send healing energy at scheduled intervals. Perhaps the most unlikely testimonial on the site comes from a medical doctor who describes using various versions of Reiki to heal the ovarian cyst of a patient who fearfully resisted surgery.
